West Palm Beach

Located in the middle of Palm Beach County, Fl lies West Palm Beach Florida which is home to over 100,000 people and while its not one of the largest cities in Florida it has some of the most expensive real estate in the USA. It is the oldest incorporated municipality in the south Florida area and it was incorporated two years before Miami back in 1894 which is 68 miles to the south of West Palm.   This area has lots of history dating back to the 1500’s when it was first discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon only to find it inhabited by its original native people.

History Of West Palm Beach

In the beginning or the historic period which is known as south Florida is marked by explorers name of Juan Ponce de Leon’s had first contact with the native people dating back to 1513 and when arriving the Europeans were thrilled to find a thriving population which later the determined to be separate tribes including the Mayaimi in the Lake Okeechobee Basin and the Jaega and Ais people located in the East Okeechobee area and on the east coast just north of the Tequesta.  Once the Spanish arrived there was approximately 20,000 Native Americans in South Florida but based on historic records in 1763 when the English Gained control of Florida all of the native peoples were all wiped out due to war, enslavement and diseases brought by the European’s.

Early in the 18th century other native peoples moved into Florida from Alabama and Georgia and varied in ancestry and were called “Creeks” by the Europeans.  But in Florida these people were known as the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians. The American Settlers and Seminoles clashed over land and escaped slaves who found refuge among them.  Fast forward between 1818 and 1858 there were three wars fought between the Seminoles and the United States Government and by the end of 1858 there were very few Seminoles remaining in Florida.

What we now know as West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870’s and 1880’s by a few hundred settlers who called this area “Lake Worth Country”. This new community was diverse in fact that the settlers came from different parts of the United States and around the world. Most settlers were engaged in the growing of tropical fruits and vegetables which was shipped to the north via Lake Worth and the Indian River. By 1890, the U.S> census counted over 200 people living along Lake Worth and the nearby vicinity of which later became West Palm Beach.  Some of the early hotels was platted and built by none other than Henry Flagler which consisted of two grand hotels including the first hotel the “Cocoanut House”, a church and the areas first post office.
